Born in Baia-Mare, Romania, in 1977, Adrian Ghenie is considered one of the foremost painters of his generation and is currently representing Romania in this year’s Venice Biennial. For his first exhibition in Paris at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac he focuses on the Self-Portrait, a recurring theme for the artist for the past eight years. Fusing images of himself with those of Vincent van Gogh, an artist of huge personal significance for Ghenie, the paintings hover between figuration and abstraction, combining the past with the present and his own imagination with actual history.
